In the 1840s, giving birth in a hospital could kill you.

In one Vienna maternity ward, women were dying of childbed fever at a terrible rate. Far more than in the ward next door.

The two wards were nearly identical, with one difference. The deadly ward was run by doctors. The safe one by midwives.

A young physician named Ignaz Semmelweis became obsessed with the gap.

He noticed the doctors went straight from dissecting corpses to delivering babies, without washing their hands.

The midwives handled no corpses. So Semmelweis made the doctors wash their hands in a chlorine solution before each delivery.

The death rate collapsed. Almost overnight.

He had found something close to a miracle. Wash your hands, and mothers stop dying.

The medical establishment rejected him.

This was before anyone knew germs existed. The idea that something invisible on a doctor's clean hands could kill a patient seemed absurd, even insulting. A gentleman's hands were clean by definition.

Semmelweis had the data. He had the living and the dead to prove it. It did not matter.

He was ridiculed, pushed out of his post, and eventually committed to an asylum, where he died of an infection.

Decades later, Pasteur and Lister proved he had been right all along.

There is a name for this now. The Semmelweis reflex. The instinct to reject a new truth because it clashes with what everyone already believes.

We like to think we would have listened. We would not have.

Being right is not enough when the truth threatens what people are certain they know.

So it is worth asking, quietly. What obvious thing are we dismissing right now, simply because it does not fit?
